From Expat to Community Contributor: A Decade in Norway

From Expat to Community Contributor: A Decade in Norway by Fatima Khan

When I moved to Oslo, I arrived with curiosity, hope, and the same quiet uncertainty every newcomer feels when they begin a new chapter far from home. I never imagined that this city- so different from the vibrant streets of Pakistan where I grew up - would become the place where I rediscovered not only my voice as an artist, but also my purpose as a community builder and philanthropist.

Over the years, Oslo has shaped me in profound ways. What began as an expat experience gradually transformed into a life of contribution, connection, and service. I found myself drawn to causes such as - women’s empowerment, cultural representation, refugee support, and community healing through art. This city gave me the space to grow, and I felt an increasing desire to give back.

Today, I am proud to serve on the board of organizations that champion inclusion and collective progress. I also act as a fundraising ambassador for initiatives close to my heart, advocating for vulnerable communities and ensuring that resources reach those who need them most. But perhaps the work closest to my soul has been conducting art therapy workshops for refugees, creating safe spaces where creativity becomes a pathway to healing, expression, and belonging. Every session reminds me that art speaks a universal language, one that reaches beyond borders, trauma, and displacement.

Living in Norway has also strengthened my belief in inclusivity and diversity. Immigrants bring colour to the West, through language, food, culture, and new ways of seeing the world. These differences aren’t just beautiful; they enrich the fabric of society and build bridges of understanding.

I feel deeply grateful—for the people who supported me, for the platforms that allowed me to contribute, and for the community that embraced me with open arms. My journey in Oslo has been a reminder that home is not just where you arrive; it is where you contribute, grow, and finally, where you choose to stay.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a joyful New Year.

May the coming year bring more compassion, creativity, and connection to us all.
